Minibeast Safari

Spend a day out and about in Gatton Park, discover some of its natural habitats and meet some of the animals and plants that live there.
The emphasis of the day is on experiencing the environments in the woodland and the pond and collecting and recording the animals that are found in these habitats.
In addition to sampling the animals in their environment the children can also have a chance to study them in the classroom and draw and closely observe one animal.
The pupils will also join in games and activities during the day which will help to put across the ideas of interdependency in the woodland and the adaptations which animals have to their environments.

Either focus on one habitat for the whole day, or compare and contrast two habitats, or alternatively combine a minibeast hunt with other activities that encourage the children to use all of their senses to enjoy their surroundings.
Growing

As a half day or a full day activity your class can look at the plants of the beautiful gardens of Gatton Park, find out how they grow and what they require for life. Activities will depend on the age of your group but could include:

• Parts of a plant – using mirrors to look at trees in a different way
• Seed tig – a run-around game to illustrate what seeds need to grow
• Using plants to create artwork
• A scavenger hunt to look at the differences between plants.
• Squirrels and seeds – how plants and animals need each other

As part of the day each child will plant a seed to take home or back to school. Why not combine Growing with a minibeast hunt to discover the plants and the animals at Gatton Park?

Barnaby Frog’s teamwork challenge

Can your team complete the challenges that will help Barnaby change from a tadpole into a frog?
Each child receives a passport and for every completed activity they draw the change which will happen to Barnaby.
The challenges encourage the children to work in pairs, small groups or larger groups to complete challenges that use co-ordination between the group members.
Can you safely lead your partner along a blindfold trail? Can your team help Barnaby to hop across the pond, using only the lily pads?
All of the children receive a certificate to congratulate them for helping Barnaby to become a frog

Apple Adventures

A programme celebrating apples and discovering the seeds of autumn. Using this theme the children learn what trees and other plants need to grow, consider the parts of a plant and their purposes and use language to describe what they discover.

• Apple taste tests
• walk around the orchard
• planting apple pips
• describing apples
• art with apples
• traditional apple games.

Look at the different types of seeds and how they find a place to grow. What do seeds need to grow?
Games and activities will introduce these basic scientific ideas.

Teddy Bear’s Picnic

A highly successful programme developed at Bishops wood centre that has now been running at Gatton for two years.

A one day visit to Gatton's woodlands provides an exciting sequence of activities which help children to learn the needs of their teddy bears and all other living things.
The secret of SWAF (shelter, water, air and food) builds an understanding of the needs of life and an energetic game of musical trees show the importance of trees and woodland in contributing to these needs. The children follow a trail of paw prints to discover how the teddies have been helped in their survival by plants and animals and then find the lost teddy bears ready for the picnic, complete with checked tablecloths.
The programme also includes stories and games and an earthwalk - encouraging the children to use all of their senses in the woods.

At the end of the day the children receive a certificate and a badge to congratulate them on becoming Teddy Bear Guardians.

The programme is supported by a teacher's pack with activities and certificates and a colouring book for the children which reinforces the ideas of the programme.

Sensory Walks

Use all of your senses to
experience Gatton Park.

This is an ideal programme to combine with another half day activity, such as a minibeast hunt. The children will have the chance to take part in a walk with a series of activities that use props and innovative ideas to encourage the children to see the environment in a different way, for example:

  • Collecting nature's colours on an artist's palette
  • Using a secrets box to collect different "touches" and then sharing them with a friend.
  • Creating their own Smelly cocktail of unusual smells from pieces of plant, soil and stones

These activities will be combined with art and games that focus on the season, for example:

  • Have a go at building your own birds' nest
  • Make a bird feeder from a cone
  • Collect autumn leaves to create a mobile

Magical maths!

Enjoy a full or half day of activities to use mathematical skills in an outdoor setting. This activity is ideal for Year2, as a reminder of lots of different maths techniques.

Enjoy the exciting Magical Maths Trail Kidnap Rescue!
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to rescue the woodland animals that have been kidnapped. Small teams work with an adult to follow the clues and rescue their animal through our Magical Maths Maze, designed by artist Ivan Hicks.

Art in the Park!

Enjoy a full or half day of activities to use art skills in an outdoor setting.

Take a walk through the beautiful grounds and open countryside of Gatton Park to get your artistic imagination flowing and use a variety of materials to create artworks.

Using our Japanese Garden as inspiration, children use found items to design and create their own miniature Japanese Gardens. They can also create their own 'Monet' using chalks and pastels.

Alternatively we can create a day based around an artist you are studying with your class. Arrange a free pre-visit with the Education Officer to discuss the options.

Why not combine Art in the Park with a Sensory Walk, so that your class can be inspired by experiencing Gatton Park through all their senses.
